Creating Balance
Does your life feel balanced?
It’s okay if this question boggles the mind. It may not be something you’ve given much thought to of late, or even had time to consider.
What we mean by balance.
When we talk about balance, the mind conjures up images of equal amounts of things on a scale. Then when we have balance in our life we feel content.
Let’s start with a little moment of reflection. What might balance feel like to you?
Work–life balance means having a healthy and sustainable balance between your professional responsibilities and your personal life.
It’s about managing your time and energy so that work doesn’t constantly interfere with your personal life.
Work–life balance is not necessarily a perfect 50/50 split.
Instead, it’s about:
Feeling in control of your schedule
Having time for rest and relationships
Being productive at work without constant burnout
Being mentally present at home and in your spare time
Creating time for things you enjoy
What this might look like:
Planning and keeping to time schedules
Creating healthy boundaries at work and in personal life
Ensuring that social events/ activities are planned
Having personal as well as professional goals
Scheduling time to rest, be that alone/ with people who calm you
How this can be done:
Regular reflection
Accountability: vocalising to ourselves/ others our plans/ goals
Setting reminders / diarising steps to keep you on track
Start conversations with work place / colleagues
Using annual leave for days to do things you enjoy / holidays / time in places or with people you enjoy spending time with.
Remembering that balance feels different to each of us, that when we feel balanced and nourished or nurtured, whatever that might look like, means our families, friends, workplaces, all get the best from us. The more fulfilled we are the more likely we are to sleep well, eat well and feel content. And also checking in to adapt or altogether change the goals or needs as we change, or move with the energy we have.
Attending yoga classes, in person or online is just one way you can reconnect and reflect on thoughts and feelings to better meet your needs and promote health and wellbeing.
